Community Infrastructure Levy

What is the CIL? The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) allows Westmoreland & Furness Council to raise funds from developers and householders undertaking new building projects. 15% of CIL receipts will be passed to Parish/Town Councils from development in their area.  As a result of current development in the village, the Parish Council currently holds approximately £16K, due to rise to circa £35K as development progresses.

What can the CIL be spent on?  Generally, the definition allows the levy to be used to fund a very broad range of facilities such as play areas, open spaces, parks and green spaces, cultural and sports facilities, healthcare facilities, academies and free schools, district heating schemes, police stations and other community safety facilities. It can be used to increase the capacity of existing infrastructure or to repair failing existing infrastructure if that is necessary to support development. It may not be used to fund affordable housing.

Residents are invited to submit grant requests for projects that meet these criteria.

Current Applications:

At the October 2023 meeting the Parish Council agreed to grant £15K to help support the replacement of tired playground equipment next to the Community Centre, Beckside.
